Like with anything else we do in the gym, technique matters. Good technique not only helps to keep us in safer positions, but it also helps us to move efficiently. If you let your elbows drop in a front squat, the weight is going to get pushed forward and make you work harder to lift. The same is true of rowing. While it’s possible to row fast today flailing around, you are doing so at the expense of your efficiency and safety.
