Hi CrossFit SAC!
It has come to our attention that there will be a state Senate hearing noon on Monday (6/26) at the state Capitol in room 3191 to discuss legislation that would create a registry for athletic trainers and would regulate the practice of athletic training. Even though it is not meant to affect fitness trainers, its definition of athletic training includes many services fitness trainers provide. If passed in its current form, fitness trainers, including CrossFit trainers, may be considered as performing athletic training and would have to meet additional education requirements and register with a state board regulating athletic trainers. It would likely make being a trainer unattainable and cost prohibitive for the vast majority of people who would fall under the new definition of an athletic trainer, and it would also restrict access to training for the public.
You can read the bill here: AB-3110
If you are available Monday at noon and can attend the hearing and show your support for the CrossFit community and the hundreds of small businesses throughout the state that would be negatively affected, we would love to have your support. If you cannot attend, please contact the bill’s author, Assemblyman Kevin Mullin at (916) 319-2022 to let him know that the activities fitness trainers provide should not be included under the definition of “athletic training.”
